It’s all about communication habits (are yours working for you?)
Do you find you are often misunderstood? Or do you have to say, “I did not mean it that way” more often than you care to? Or you feel others “twist your words?”
Well, you are not alone. Many of us do not communicate very well. We talk a great deal, but not necessarily communicate. By communicate, I mean ensure mutual understanding. Not necessarily agreement but understanding.
The way we communicate is a habit. Our habits have power.
Think about what you said when someone misunderstood you. What exactly did you mean versus what you actually said? What did you say when someone twisted your words.
These are your daily communication habits. We all have them. It’s the routine way that we connect with others. Sometimes, it can be our standard response to certain questions with our close friends or family members especially if it is about a subject we don’t want to talk about.
This week, try to bring some awareness to your communication habits – the ones you are intentional about and the ones you might be doing without even noticing.
What do you do consistently that works well for you? And what things do you consistently do that don’t work well for you?
How might some seemingly small habits make a big difference in how you communicate?
